Srinagar Heatwave: Temperatures to Soar to 34°C Today, Season-High 35°C Likely Tomorrow
Srinagar, June 12 (The Kashmir Essence): The summer heat has tightened its grip on the Kashmir Valley, with the summer capital Srinagar expected to experience a scorching 34°C today — the second-highest temperature recorded this season. Meteorological officials warn that temperatures may peak at a season-high of 35°C on Thursday, raising heatwave concerns across the region.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), dry weather conditions are expected to persist over the next few days, with no immediate relief in sight. The prevailing high-pressure system over northern India is contributing to the soaring temperatures, which are unusual for this time of the year in the Valley.
“We are seeing a persistent rise in day temperatures due to the absence of significant western disturbances. Srinagar is likely to touch 35°C tomorrow, which would mark the hottest day of the season so far,” said an official from the Meteorological Centre, Srinagar.
The sharp rise in temperature has already begun to impact daily life. Residents are reporting discomfort, with power demand increasing across districts as people rely more on fans, coolers, and air conditioning systems. Health officials are urging people, especially children, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses, to avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and to stay hydrated.
Dr. Arif Hussain, a general physician at SMHS Hospital, warned, “Heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and dehydration are real concerns. People should avoid going out during peak afternoon hours and drink plenty of water.”
Educational institutions have also been advised to modify school timings or consider early summer breaks if the heatwave conditions continue. Meanwhile, tourists visiting the Valley, drawn by the usual pleasant climate, are being met with unusually hot conditions and are advised to take necessary precautions.
While Srinagar’s average maximum temperature for June typically hovers around 29°C, the forecasted 35°C tomorrow would be well above normal, potentially breaking previous June records.
Meteorologists are not predicting significant rainfall or weather disturbances for at least the next 72 hours, meaning the current heat spell may persist through the weekend.
Tips for Coping with the Heat:
- Stay indoors during peak afternoon hours (12 PM to 4 PM)
- Wear light, breathable clothing
- Drink plenty of fluids
- Avoid strenuous outdoor activities
- Use umbrellas or hats when outdoors
